Chaldean has won the first classic of the horse racing season, the 2,000 Guineas from Newmarket in Doncaster. Frankie Dettori won the iconic race in his final year in racing. The 52-year-old is set to retire this October and came into this race having been unseated by Chaldean last time out. But the ageless wonder did it on the big stage today.
Hi Royal could not make that appropriate name count on the day of the Coronation, but the runner-up pushed Chaldean until the final stretch in a fine performance. The Royal Scotsman came third with 150/1 shot Galeron rounding out the field in fourth. The outsider started really well, before dropping off late on.
But today belonged to Dettori. They’ll miss the Italian legend when he’s gone and wellwishers queued up around Newmarket to congratulate the soon-to-depart jockey. Enjoy him while he’s here. There will never be another quite like him.
Chaldean shines for @AndrewBalding2 and @Juddmonte
